‘Islands of transformation’, ‘islands of salvation’- this is how the Solovki islands in the White Sea have been called from time immemorial. Solovki is a home to one of Russia’s oldest shrines- the Transfiguration of the Lord male monastery, an outpost of the Orthodox faith in the Russian North.
On 13th of September the first international conference on spiritual and historical heritage of the Solovki monastery opened there to last for about a week.
